Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain, is a real treasure trove for art and culture lovers. One of the biggest attractions are its museums, which house some of the most important art collections in the world.

But did you know that you can visit many of Madrid’s museums for free? Yes, you read that right. On certain days and at certain times, you can access these wonderful cultural centres free of charge. So, if you’re planning your next visit to Madrid, read on to find out when you can enjoy the cultural wealth of this city without spending a euro.

When are the museums in Madrid free?

Museo del Prado

The Prado Museum is one of Madrid’s most emblematic destinations and you can’t miss it. Moreover, you can visit it for free from Monday to Saturday, between 18:00 and 20:00 hours, and on Sundays and public holidays, from 17:00 to 19:00 hours.

There are also certain groups of people who can enjoy the Prado Museum in Madrid for free at any time. This includes children under the age of 18, students between 18 and 25, students over the age of 25 in the branch of art (from the Spanish Education System), people with a disability equal to or greater than 33%, people who are legally unemployed and active teaching staff, among others.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía

If you are a contemporary art lover, you cannot miss a visit to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. And if you’re looking to save a little, you’ll be happy to know that you can enter the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid for free at certain times.

From Monday to Saturday, admission is free from 7pm to 9pm and on Sundays from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. There are also several public holidays on which you can visit the museum free of charge: 18 April, 18 May, 12 October, and 6 December.

As in the Prado, there are also specific groups that can enjoy this museum free of charge at any time on presentation of an appropriate accreditation.

Palacio Real

You can visit the Royal Palace Museum in Madrid for free if you are a citizen of the European Union or Latin America and have a residence or work permit in these territories. The free opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 16:00 to 18:00. Remember that the last time you can enter is one hour before closing time, i.e. at 17:00.

There are also other groups who can enjoy free admission to the Royal Palace of Madrid. These include children under 5 years of age, the legally unemployed, people with disabilities and their companion, active teaching staff with a teaching card and members of large families.

Museo Thyssen

If you are planning a trip to Madrid, you cannot miss a free visit to the Thyssen Museum, one of the most important museums in the city. Admission to the museum is free every Monday for everyone. Moreover, if you are under 18 years old, unemployed or have the Youth Card, you will also be able to enter free of charge.

CaixaForum

The CaixaForum is an architectural gem in Madrid, a place you can’t miss. There are specific days when you can enjoy all its exhibitions free of charge: 15 May, Saint Isidore’s Day; 18 May, International Museum Day; and 9 November, the day of Nuestra Señora de la Almudena, are the key dates to visit without spending a single euro. What’s more, if you are a CaixaBank customer, holder of the European Youth Card or under 16, you always have free admission to all the exhibitions.

Museo del Romanticismo

The Romanticism Museum, located in the heart of Madrid, can be visited free of charge every Saturday from 2pm and on Sundays. In addition, there are several days a year when you can also enter free of charge: 18 April (International Day for Monuments and Sites), 18 May (International Museum Day), 12 October (Spanish National Day) and 6 December (Spanish Constitution Day).

Museo Sorolla

The museum dedicated to the work of the Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla is another of the treasures you can visit for free in Madrid. The no-cost visit is available on Saturdays from 14:00 to 20:00 (note that the last entrance is at 19:45) and on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00. However, there is one important detail to consider: free admission is not available online and you cannot book it in advance. Also, if you are under 18 years old or a pensioner, you can also enjoy free admission with accreditation.

Museo Arqueológico

Get ready to travel back in time! Take advantage of free admission to the Archaeological Museum of Madrid every Saturday from 2pm and Sunday mornings. Also, mark your calendars for 18 April (Monuments and Sites Day), 18 May (International Museum Day), 12 October (Spanish National Day) and 6 December (Spanish Constitution Day), when you can also enjoy the museum free of charge.

Museo de América

The Museo de América can be visited free of charge every Sunday during its opening hours, and on Thursdays from 2pm. In addition, there are several special dates when you can also enter free of charge: 18 April (International Day for Monuments and Sites), 18 May (International Museum Day), 12 October (Spanish National Day) and 6 December (Spanish Constitution Day).
